History of teams making playoffs after 1-2 start since 2020

A look at how many teams have made the playoffs after a 1-2 start since the playoffs expanded in 2020.

As disheartening as things currently feel following the Tennessee Titans’ horrendous 24-point loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, it really isn’t the end of the world in the grand scheme of things.

Ever since the NFL decided to expand its playoff field to 14 teams in 2020, there have been 10 teams that started the year 1-2 and still made the playoffs, according to Jeff Wagner of WCCO News.

For perspective, that’s nearly 24 percent of the playoff field during that span. Last season alone, a total of three teams made the playoffs after a 1-2 start.

It won’t be easy for a Titans team that is severely struggling on the offensive side of the ball whenever they face a formidable defense. Regardless, history tells us that it’s definitely possible as long as they figure things out sooner rather than later.

Let’s not forget that the Titans were 1-2 just a season ago before winning seven of their next eight games before injuries destroyed any realistic hope of making a playoff run.

If the Titans want any chance of getting back on track, it starts on Sunday when they host the Cincinnati Bengals, a team that is also 1-2.
