UNC football named among top 10 most surprising September teams

The UNC football program was named as one of the surprise teams in 2023 for college football so far.

The month of September comes to a close this weekend as Week 5 of college football will wrap up. For the North Carolina Tar Heels, they have a bye week and will finish the month 4-0 with three non-conference wins and a conference win over Pitt.

Of the four wins, the most impressive is probably the opener against South Carolina at a neutral site. The win got the season started off on the right foot and helped build momentum as they beat Appalachian State and then Minnesota at home in the next two weeks.

With the 4-0 start to the season, North Carolina was named one of the most surprising teams so far by Brad Crawford of 247Sports checking in at No. 10:

Heralded quarterback Drake Maye hasn’t been at his best with four interceptions in a new offense without expected top receiver Tez Walker. The Tar Heels still managed to navigate a challenging non-conference journey to the tune of an unbeaten start and No. 15 ranking in the AP Poll. That’s the sign of a great team being well-prepared with good coaching. The Tar Heels have an open date before hosting unbeaten Syracuse in Week 6 and a date with Miami the following weekend.

Things get tougher in October and November for the Tar Heels, beginning next week as they host Syracuse who is currently 4-0. UNC still has games against Miami and Duke, two ranked teams as well as road games at Clemson and NC State.
