Third-year cornerback Greg Newsome II has not practiced this week, including working on the side in practice today as the Cleveland Browns prepare for the Tennessee Titans. He injured his elbow late in the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers as he brought a ball carrier to the ground. Speaking to the media today, head coach Kevin Stefanski has now ruled Newsome out against the Titans on Sunday.
This means that fifth round rookie Cameron Mitchell is likely the next man up to play in the nickel for the Browns this week. Mitchell’s time at Northwestern provides us with a ton of data that shows he has the skill set to play in the slot and do so well. In addition to his 400 special teams snaps throughout his career, Mitchell also played over 100 snaps in the box or slot for the Wildcats a year ago.
From his time at Northwestern a year ago, Mitchell racked up a massive 15 stop tackles, missing just six tackles in 2022. As the Browns wait for Newsome to return (hopefully next week), the rookie gets his shot.
