The San Antonio Spurs have one of the brightest futures in the league. With their selection of Victor Wembanyama, they secured a guy who has had more hype around him than any other prospect since LeBron James. And from the looks of it, he has the talent to back it up. They are set up beautifully for the future.
But Wembanyama isn’t satisfied with a bright future. He wants to win now. While speaking at an online press conference to promote the documentary “Un1que” on the Canal+ French network, Wembanyama unveiled his goal with the Spurs for his first season in the league. (H/t France 24)
He said that he wants to make the playoffs right away.
“To qualify for the playoffs,” Wembanyama said.
If the 19-year-old rookie manages to do that, he would snap a four-year playoff drought in San Antonio – the longest in franchise history.
He also stated that he’s not worried about all the pressure that comes with the position he’s been put in.
“I don’t feel any pressure. These are stages that are part of the life of a basketball player,” said Wembanyama. “When you have such high goals it’s normal that there is so much attention, questions, invasive people.”
And while Wembanyama is eager to compete, he’s also understanding of the fact that San Antonio is in no rush.
“For the future, the best thing is not knowing what awaits us,” he said. “It’s very hard to win a (championship) ring. But I’m patient, I know it will happen at one point or another.”
All things considered, the Spurs seem to be in great hands.
