The Oklahoma Sooners are fresh off an underwhelming performance in Week 2. The defense played well, holding a really good SMU Mustangs offense to 11 points.
The offensive line looked confused and struggled most of the day. The offense was lackluster. This resulted in only 28 points against a team most thought Oklahoma would have quite a bit of success.
Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports gave out his Week 2 grades for several teams, including Oklahoma. His grade might surprise some: He gave the Sooners a “B” for the day.
Oklahoma’s 28-11 win over SMU doesn’t exactly jump off the page, but the defense looked great against an extremely underrated Mustangs offense. The fact that it was a defensively driven game was actually a feature, not a bug. – Sallee, CBS Sports
Sallee hit the nail right on the head. Much is going to be made of the offense’s lack of success, but the defense was so impressive. I’m still not at the point where I think this will be a top 50 unit at the end of the year, but it is off to a great start and showing improvement.
It gave up the first touchdown after seven quarters, which is the longest streak since 1999, and the defense held SMU to its fewest points scored since 2017. Both of those notes should make Sooner fans very happy.
