NASCAR could move Watkins Glen to the 2024 Cup Series playoffs

There has been some “chatter” that NASCAR could move Watkins Glen International into the 2024 Cup Series playoffs.

The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series schedule is one that will likely bring several changes as Auto Club Speedway won’t return while the Indianapolis Road Course could turn into the oval layout. However, there is another area that hasn’t been mentioned as much and that is the playoff schedule for the sport’s top series.

Currently, the sport knows Phoenix Raceway will return as the Championship 4 event but what about some other possible changes? FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass went on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio and revealed what he has been hearing about potential changes that could be coming soon.

“I think there has been a question of whether you could put (Watkins Glen International) in the playoffs, there’s been some chatter about that,” Pockrass said. “The question there would be you have such great camping there in August, would you have great camping there if it’s in the playoffs because then you’re getting into more the school time than the traditional late summer time?”

If Watkins Glen were to move into the playoffs, it seems reasonable to suggest that Charlotte Motor Speedway would revert back to the oval layout for its playoff date. The oval racing has been significantly better than road course racing with the NextGen car. Still, it would be very, very exciting to see Watkins Glen moved to the playoffs and there should be answers sooner rather than later.
