The Seattle Seahawks’ arch rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, made headlines Wednesday afternoon. San Francisco came to terms with reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa to make him the highest paid defender in NFL history.
The 49ers have a supremely talented roster, but it’s also getting incredibly expensive. Bosa’s mega-deal is just another in an increasingly long line of big money being handed out to San Francisco’s core.
The #49ers have the highest-paid DE (Nick Bosa), highest-paid RB (Christian McCaffrey), highest-paid FB (Kyle Juszczyk), the third-highest-paid TE (George Kittle), the third-highest-paid LT (Trent Williams), the third-highest-paid LB (Fred Warner), the sixth-highest-paid DT… https://t.co/JLicKs8b0f

Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel, Trent Williams and George Kittle all received massive extensions within the last three years. While it was the Carolina Panthers who gave Christian McCaffrey his mega-deal, it’s the 49ers who are on the hook for it.
This is all sounding a tad familiar. An NFC West team blowing through trade picks and cash to acquire/retain star players? Sure sounds an awful lot like the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams went all-in and ultimately, it worked out. They won a Super Bowl, and banners fly forever.
But in the NFL, when teams put it all on the credit card, the bill eventually comes due and the Piper always gets paid. The Rams are currently in the midst of a reboot, where they will try to be competitive, but it will likely trend to a full-blown rebuild.
San Francisco seems to be headed down this path. Make no mistake, this team is considered to be a Super Bowl contender for a reason. But this could very likely be their final legitimate run before their stars start aging out and getting even more expensive. The 49ers appear to be putting all their chips in the middle of the table as well. Only time will tell if their gamble pays off.
