Brian Kelly on disappointing Florida State loss: ‘We thought we were the two-time national champion Georgia Bulldogs or something’

Brian Kelly didn’t mince words about his team taking its foot off the gas in the second half.

LSU played a bit of a sloppy first half of football in Sunday’s loss to Florida State, but it wasn’t a bad one.

The Tigers moved the ball and took a 17-14 lead to the locker room. The second half, however, was a completely different story.

The Seminoles took over the game, outscoring LSU 31-7 in the final two quarters en route to a convincing 45-24 win to kick off the season in Orlando. After the game, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] didn’t mince words about his team taking its foot off the gas in the second half.

Yeah, I’m quite aware of the score and I didn’t like the way we came out. I sensed it. I felt it,” he said. “I’ve got to take accountability and responsibility for the way that we came out in the second half. It’s disappointing. But the buck stops with me, and I’ve got to get our football team to understand and recognize that you’ve got to play this game for four quarters with a mentality. And we just did not, for some reason.

“We thought we were somebody else. We thought we were the two-time national champion Georgia Bulldogs or something. I don’t know what we thought, but we were mistaken.”

The Tigers were mistaken, indeed, and now they go back to the drawing board against Grambling before SEC play begins with a road trip to take on Mississippi State in Week 3.
