Notre Dame wide receivers are a work in progress, as is the USC secondary

ND’s receivers versus SC’s secondary could be the matchup which decides Irish-Trojans. Stay focused on these two position groups.

We are checking in on Fighting Irish Wire in the weeks leading up to USC’s game at Notre Dame on October 14.

One of the major plot points in USC-Notre Dame will be the Trojans’ evolving secondary against Notre Dame’s under-the-radar receivers. These are not team strengths. One side could benefit a lot from improving what is currently an underdeveloped part of its roster.

We asked Fighting Irish Wire editor Nick Shepkowski if he saw enough from the Notre Dame receivers against Navy to make him think this offense can score enough to beat Ohio State, USC and Clemson.

“Yes and no,” Shepkowski answered. “The freshmen were as good as advertised but Tobias Merriweather was supposed to be the breakout star and had a disappointing game. A lot is expected of the sophomore but he didn’t seem ready to go. Fortunately for Notre Dame, the big-time boost at quarterback will also be beneficial in closing that gap.”
