Michigan football has long been a feeder school to the NFL, but despite the huge numbers who have entered into the league via the draft, some of the bigger names aren’t on the opening day rosters.
The biggest absence is Tom Brady, who opted to retire this season, as did fellow quarterback Chad Henne, who was a longtime backup.
36 former Michigan football players ended up on 21 of the 32 NFL teams, but there are some other notable omissions. The Houston Texans cut Chase Winovich, Maurice Hurst was waived by the Browns but is expected to be re-added to the active roster before the season, Seahawks defensive tackle Bryan Mone is on injured reserve, and the Titans put Hassan Haskins on exempt status due to his legal issues.
Some surprises included Ronnie Bell making the 49ers roster, as did punter Brad Robbins with the Bengals. The Bengals actually have four former Wolverines, meaning the Ohio-based team has the most Michigan players of any other in the league. Seattle, San Francisco, New England, and Dallas have three each. The 11 teams that don’t have any former Wolverines are the Bears, Dolphins, Jets, Bills, Titans, Falcons, Buccaneers, Panthers, Rams, Jaguars, and Cardinals.
