The New England Patriots reportedly waived rookie quarterback Malik Cunningham ahead of the roster cut down deadline on Tuesday.
Cunningham was signed as an undrafted free agent by the team in April. He showcased his versatility throughout the preseason, playing at both the quarterback and wide receiver positions. While under center, he tallied 19 passing yards on 3-of-6 passing attempts. He also recorded a catch as a wideout.
Louisville fans likely weren’t surprised to see Cunningham’s dual-threat quarterback abilities stand out at the next level. He recorded 9,964 passing yards and 70 touchdowns in five seasons with the Cardinals, as well as 3,182 rushing yards and 50 touchdowns.

Just because Cunningham was released doesn’t necessarily mean his time in New England is done. The team still could opt to stash him on their practice squad, if he clears waivers.
