Dak Prescott and the Cowboys may be locked in to gearing up for the New York Giants on opening night of their 2023 season, but a development today in the desert will have ramifications on preparations for their Week 3 game.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will start the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to a report from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. That move would exclude the 26-year-old Metroplex native from facing the Cowboys when they visit Glendale on Sept. 24.
Murray, who was a high school star in Allen, Tex., suffered an ACL tear in Week 14 of the 2022 campaign but didn’t have surgery until January. It was widely speculated that Murray would not be ready for the start of the 2023 season, but the fact that he’ll still be on the club’s PUP list at Tuesday’s roster deadline means he must sit for at least the first four games of the Cardinals’ schedule.

The first-round pick in 2019’s draft signed a massive five-year contract extension worth $230.5 million ($160 million guaranteed) just last offseason, but most experts believe the team will cut ties with him before 2024.

Surprisingly, the Cardinals on Monday also released veteran Colt McCoy, who had taken first-team reps for the entirety of Arizona’s camp. That leaves either Josh Dobbs- who the team only acquired last week- or fifth-round rookie Clayton Tune to start the season under center.
