Rookie WR Shaquan Davis making a late push as Saints approach roster cuts

Many New Orleans Saints players are currently on the roster bubble and fighting for their spot on the depth chart. For those guys, this final week of practice is paramount. When making a list of the players who are finishing strong, rookie wide receiver Shaquan Davis has to be at the top of the list. Davis was not drafted out of South Carolina State, but the Saints made him one of their highest-paid undrafted free agents.

Saints head coach Dennis Allen labeled knowledge of the playbook one of Davis’ biggest obstacles to start the summer. Davis seems to have the playbook understood now and it became evident to most against the Los Angeles Chargers. He hauled in 5 catches for 83 yards including two impressive contested catches. He carried over that momentum into this week’s practice. Davis has done most of his work from the slot in the same role as Saints great Marques Colston.

Allen says Davis didn’t know if the ball was stuffed or pumped when he first got here. That’s a new one but a good description of how far he’s come. Davis has made standout plays twice in recent practices and is making a late push for the Saints to keep him among their six wide receivers. If Davis can provide special teams value, it would make his case a much easier sell. It’s clear Davis has talent and is starting to figure out things.
