The CBS Sports college football staff has released its preseason preview for the SEC in 2023, and you can’t talk about the league without heavy discussion of coach Brian Kelly’s LSU team.
Winners of the SEC West last fall, the Tigers are looking to at least return to Atlanta. But with much of last year’s core returning, this team has higher expectations. Perhaps even College Football Playoff expectations.
Several members of the CBS Sports staff are fairly high on the Tigers entering this fall, with Dennis Dodd predicting that LSU will go 11-1, losing to Georgia in the SEC Championship by a field goal.
Perhaps Tigers fans don’t want Dodd’s prediction to come true, however, as he also predicts that Kelly will jump to the NFL following the season.
Tom Fornelli listed LSU as his most underrated team, as well.
The SEC West will once again come down to Alabama or LSU. Going into the season, I have far fewer concerns about the Tigers than I do the Tide. LSU has a proven veteran QB with depth behind him, as well as talent at running back and wide receiver. While there are some concerns about the secondary early in the season, the defensive front seven will be solid. The closer I look at the SEC in 2023, the more I believe LSU is a bigger threat than Alabama to not just dethrone Georgia in the conference but win the national title as well.
Overall, six of the eight panelists picked the Tigers to win the West, though Georgia was the unanimous overall pick to win the conference once again.
