ANN ARBOR, Mich. — At this time in 2022, the big question about the Michigan football running back room was who was going to replace Hassan Haskins’ skill set?
Blake Corum was known as ‘lightning’ to Haskins’ ‘thunder,’ but he wasn’t known as a player who could turn one yard into three or three into five. But then, he came out and did just that.
Now, entering his junior year, Donovan Edwards is hoping that he can go from being a home run-hitter to adding similar techniques to his arsenal
“I really like that Blake Corum shuffle!” Edwards said earlier in August. “Like getting in my bag like — Blake be making people miss in the open field. That’s really what I’m trying to add to my bag, making the safety miss. If I can make the safety miss, it should be a touchdown every single time.”
But how is that coming along? Corum says that Edwards has everything he needs to do anything he wants to on the field.
“Actually, after practice yesterday, two days ago, we’re working on some moves. But, Don, he has it all man, he is the complete package,” Corum said. He has every tool in his box that he needs. He has that shimmy — it’s just refining it.
“We learn from each other. From him, I learned a lot. How precise can I be on my routes? You know, he’s a real good route runner. For me, he wants to know how, ‘What’s that move you use?’ So we feed off each other. But, he’s a heck of a running back, man. He’s gonna have a great year. I’m excited to see what he does this year. He’s been putting in the work. And I expect greatness from him. But like I said, Don has everything in his toolbox, man.”
Fans will get to see if that is truly the case on Sept. 2 for the season opener against East Carolina. Kickoff is set for noon EDT at The Big House.
