The Cleveland Browns have released former Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond

It was revealed on Thursday morning that the Cleveland Browns have released former Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond.

On Tuesday morning, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Cleveland Browns have released former Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond, who joined the Browns in August of last year.

After his brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings, who drafted Mond in the 3rd round of the 2022 NFL Draft, it was clear that a change of scenery and coaching staff was needed for his full development at the position to take place. Still, after the Browns drafted the electric former UCLA dual-threat quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, his plans to ascend the depth chart reached a screeching halt.

After earning the first start of the 2023 preseason in the Hall of Fame Game against the New York Jets earlier this month, posting an efficient stat line with 13/19 for 92 yards and a touchdown, Thompson-Robinson’s late game heroics to lead the Browns to a 21-17 victory (8-11, 82 yards, 1 TD) overshadowed Mond’s steady performance.

Dethroned by Thompson-Robinson against the Washington Commanders, Mond’s impressive final drive included 79 yards through the air on 7-12 passing while throwing an impressive strike for a touchdown to WR Mike Harley Jr. with just 1:39 left in the fourth quarter. However, it was abundantly clear that the rookie had more than made his mark and had taken a steady lead in the 3rd-string race.

In Mond’s final game with the Browns, Thompson-Robinson started the matchup (13/25, 164 yards), while the Aggie record holder went 12/24 for 126 yards, actually outshining the rookie in multiple areas.

Kellen Mond’s NFL future will depend on how willing he is to put the work in day after day to improve his mechanics, accuracy, and pocket awareness, but due to his stature and proven arm strength, don’t be surprised if he’s claimed off of waivers sooner than later.

In four seasons with Texas A&M from 2017 to 2020, Kellen Mond threw for 9,661 yards with 71 touchdowns and 17 interceptions with a career 132.0 passer rating in college. He also added 1,609 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground, finishing his career at Texas A&M as one of three SEC quarterbacks, along with Tim Tebow and Dak Prescott, to record over 9,000 career passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards.
