Jayden Gibson working to get over the mental hurdle to become a ‘sound player’

Confidence issues have plagued Jayden Gibson but now he hopes to get past that and become a more complete player.

The wide receiver room for the [autotag]Oklahoma Sooners[/autotag] is one of the rooms with the most question marks. Who is the person that will step up and take the role [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag] left behind?

A lot of names have been thrown out there, and one guy constantly mentioned is [autotag]Jayden Gibson[/autotag]. Gibson is someone fans have heard a lot about, but it hasn’t come together on the field yet.

To be fair, Gibson hasn’t had a lot of opportunities. But when he has, he hasn’t taken advantage of them. He was thrown into the game early versus the [autotag]TCU Horned Frogs[/autotag] and dropped a key third down. He was the target on a two-point conversion for the win in the spring game and dropped it in the back of the end zone.

It feels like it’s a confidence issue with Gibson. He acknowledged to reporters that is something he’s struggled with.

“I feel like a lot of my battle was mentally,” Gibson said. “Now I feel like I’ve kind of got that out of the way. I feel like I’ve become more of a sound player. One of my biggest strong suits is big plays and being able to stretch the field and that sort of thing. I know the coaches want to see a lot more consistency from me in the short game and just being more of a sound player in my concepts.”

Gibson gives Oklahoma a weapon they haven’t had in many years. Oklahoma is not a team that typically has a big elite receiver. It’s now time for Gibson to put it all together.

“I think I’m a way better player because he (Emmett Jones) teaches me to recognize my weaknesses and attack them and to not shy away from them and not try to mask them but truly make them your strong points,” Gibson said.

The talent is there. The consistency needs to get there. It seems like he’s a player who just needs to see a few catches early in the game. Even if they are just a screen pass. Just something to help build that confidence.

If they are able to do that and Gibson gains that confidence in games, the sky is the limit.
