Sam Howell ready to make the most of opportunity with Commanders

Former UNC football quarterback Sam Howell is ready for his opportunity with the Washington Commanders.

It was just last week that Ron Rivera officially named Sam Howell the starting quarterback of the Washington Commanders. After an offseason in which Howell took the first-team reps, he beat out veteran Jacoby Brissett to lead the team into Week 1.

On Monday, Howell helped the Commanders end the Baltimore Ravens 24-game preseason win streak in a 29-28 win at home. While Howell only played the first half, he completed 19 of his 25 attempts for 188 yards and two touchdowns, including connecting with Dyami Brown for his second touchdown pass of the game.

With Howell out for the second half, he did do a sideline interview where he was asked what this opportunity meant for him with the Commanders:

“Yeah, I’m so excited. I’m just so blessed, so blessed by god to be given this opportunity,” Howell said. “So I’m going to do everything I can to make the most of it.”

While it’s only the preseason, it’s been a good start for Howell as the Commanders are 2-0 in the preseason with him as a starter. Hopefully, he can carry this into the regular season and keep the momentum going.
