To say that Philadelphia is excited for its first WrestleMania in 25 years appears to be a bit of an understatement.
WWE officially confirmed today that on the first day of ticket sales, which took place this past Friday, Aug. 18, WrestleMania 40 broke the all-time gate record for the event, selling more than 90,000 tickets in the first 24 hours.
The previous record gross of $21.6 million was set just this year for WrestleMania 39 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood near Los Angeles.
If it seems like WWE is making announcements like this on a regular basis, that impression is correct. Earlier this month, SummerSlam at Ford Field in Detroit set new high marks in several areas, including a gate of $8.5 million that was a record for any non-WrestleMania WWE show. And Money in the Bank, which was held in London’s O2 Arena in early July, was the highest-grossing arena event in company history.
It’s also not just WWE that’s hot. AEW recently broke the all-time record for tickets distributed for a single-day wrestling show with more than 80,800 tickets for its upcoming All In event at London’s Wembley Stadium — notably eclipsing a mark previously held by WrestleMania 32.
In any case, WWE says there are still limited seats available for WrestleMania through Ticketmaster, and despite the incredibly high demand, more should open up as the show draws near and the layout of the stage and ring are finalized if history is any indication.
WrestleMania 40 is set for Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on April 6-7, 2024.
