Colts’ Anthony Richardson ‘forever thankful’ to be named starting QB

Anthony Richardson is thankful for the opportunity but knows the work is just beginning.

Indianapolis Colts rookie Anthony Richardson knew he would get his opportunity at some point to take over as the starting quarterback of the franchise, but there’s still nothing quite like hearing the actual confirmation when it happened.

Head coach Shane Steichen announced to the media following Tuesday’s training camp practice that Richardson would be the starting quarterback moving forward. It was essentially a formality as it was going to happen at some point.

But Richardson still felt a bit of shock hearing the words.

“It was just hearing the words, because you work for it. I didn’t know when the timeline was going to be,” Richardson told reporters Tuesdya. “I was just looking forward to Week 1 and being ready for the opportunity and getting thrown in the fire hopefully. He told me and I’m just like, ‘Wow. It really happened.’ I’m thankful, I’m blessed and I’ve just got to keep working and just keep building on this opportunity.”

The No. 4 overall pick made his debut in the preseason against the Buffalo Bills, turning in a modest performance. He threw an interception on this third pass attempt but bounced back nicely on his next two drives, proving he has the type of poise necessary to handle a starting gig in the league.

Even though Richardson can check this moment off his objectives list, he understands the work is only beginning.

“I’ve been grinding and putting in work just to get the title, but it’s not really all about the title. I’m just trying to make sure I’m ready for the team. Despite being labeled as QB1, I’ve still got other guys in the room helping me get to that standard,” Richardson said. “I’m forever thankful for them. I appreciate them and I’m glad I did get the nod and that I do have the trust of everybody in the building too to think I am QB1.”

Richardson will get another taste of the NFL life when the Chicago Bears come to town for joint practices ahead of Saturday’s preseason game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

But now, the focus can be on tailoring the offense specifically to Richardson’s needs now that he’s been named the starter.
