Here’s why Cowboys’ first depth chart cannot be trusted

The Cowboys released their first unofficial depth chart of training camp but in order to understand it, @ReidDHanson says one must read between the lines.

For weeks, if not months, fans and media types have been speculating and projecting how the Cowboys final roster will unfold. From scouting reports to potential position battles, depth charts have been created and outcomes predicted.

Two weeks into camp, the Cowboys provided a taste of what’s to come when they released their first unofficial depth chart of summer. The release has sparked numerous debates as surprise risers and fallers appeared throughout.

For as welcomed as the first depth chart is, it should be taken with a grain of salt because it’s far from foretelling, and more often than not, used to serve its own agenda.

The first depth chart is part snapshot and part strategy. Yes, it indicates who is competing where and how early returns in practice appear today. It also pushes players into buckets in which they don’t necessarily fit and is designed to set the stage for preseason games rather than the final 53-man roster.
