Last season, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Allen Robinson II spent last season miscast as an outside receiver on the Los Angeles Rams. But now he is with the Steelers, Robinson has an opportunity in Year 10 to return to the slot with Pittsburgh and be a legitimate weapon for quarterback Kenny Pickett.
You can’t fault the Rams for not putting Robinson in the slot. Cooper Kupp is probably the best slot receiver in the NFL. Los Angeles was maximizing the talent on the roster.
But with the Steelers, Robinson works perfectly with Diontae Johnson and George Pickens on the perimeter. Robinson’s size and physicality help him create mismatched on the inside against smaller slot cornerbacks and his athleticism gives him an edge over linebackers and safeties.
Pittsburgh will also be able to work in Speedy Calvin Austin III into the rotation which should further expand the opportunities with the passing game. Austin is less of a slot receiver but could allow the team to move Pickens or Johnson inside and create a scary four-wide receiver set.
