It is a far cry from where the team used to be, but there were some events that occurred that changed the trajectory of the franchise.

In a recent article by Tim Bontemps of ESPN, he said that one of the biggest what-ifs in the NBA over the past five seasons was Kevin Durant getting hurt for the Nets in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. In both years, Brooklyn was expected to be one of the teams that made it deep into the playoffs with the chance of winning a title.
