After being selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft by the Houston Texans, wide receiver John Metchie received a diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia. While receiving treatment, Metchie had to watch his rookie season fly by. Now, he has been cleared to return and is preparing to take on the NFL.
Metchie was a stellar receiver for the Crimson Tide and is now expected to serve a large role on a very young, talented offense that appears poised to compete with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the AFC South.
While at training camp, Metchie has been working on getting ready for the upcoming regular season. One of his teammates recently said this of Metchie
“It’s really inspiring seeing him fight back and do everything that he’s been doing,” said second-year defensive back Jalen Pitre. “He’s a guy that I want on my team because I know there’s no quit in a guy like that. He’s continuing to show up and continuing to fight. That’s big for me, and it’s very inspiring.”
His story is an inspiration to all, but it must hit his teammates hard. Seeing him persevere and find his way back onto the field shows his strength, mentally and physically.
Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Metchie and other former Alabama football players now in the NFL.
