Myles Garrett speaks on the Browns expectations and criticisms during training camp

Former Texas A&M star Myles Garrett has discussed several topics over the past few days regarding the state of the Brown and his improvement.

As NFL teams start their training camps, it’s a good time to gauge the temperature in the room for the start of the year. Since most teams are not hitting yet, there is only so much we can glean from the first week or so. What we can do is get early interviews to see how players feel about the upcoming season and any news that might have cropped up during the off-season.

Myles Garrett touched on several topics during his media time a few days ago. He is entering his prime with a great chance to make a Hall of Fame run in the second half of his career. However, if you know Garrett, you know he will credit his teammates and believes he has another level to hit.

“Just playing well together and playing well as a unit,” Garrett said. “Being a cohesive unit and allowing each other to play off each other. It hasn’t always been at its best. … But all of us on the same field at the same time, it’s hard to double team everyone. So allowing us to know that situation, coaching us beforehand, watching the film and everyone being on the same page of how to react and how to attack from there — that is how we all go to the next level.”

While Garrett is an all-world talent, there are a few questions about his leadership skills as one of the Browns’ top players. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski handed out the book “The Captain Class: A New Theory of Leadership” to all the coaches and select players, with Garrett being one of them. He has always been one to lead by example but has also recognized that he might need to be more vocal from now on, as he explained to Jori Epstein at Yahoo.

“But now, this stage of my career, trying to lead [by] having that ability to be outspoken in a way that most shows younger guys, it’s not just coach. A lot of these older guys have a lot of knowledge we can tap into.”

During a media session, he also took some time to respond to criticisms a former teammate leveled at him.

It will be interesting to see how Garrett improves in the leadership aspect of his game and if we see the dividends payoff for the Browns on the defensive side of the ball.
