It looks as if veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon will remain a member of the Boston Celtics for the foreseeable future. According to Heavy’s Steve Bulpett, rival teams around the NBA have been unable to gain any meaningful traction in trying to engage the Celtics regarding a possible trade for the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year. Although this comes just a few weeks after Brogdon was nearly sent to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of Boston’s pursuit of Kristaps Porzingis, it may not be a surprising development.
Brogdon dealt with an injured tendon in his elbow during this postseason, and was plainly not the same reliable offensive force he had been during the regular season. Brogdon shot 44.4% on 3-pointers during the ’22-23 campaign, providing 14.9 points and 3.7 assists in a bench role before a disappointing playoffs run.
With Marcus Smart headed to the Memphis Grizzlies, however, it is possible the Celtics hold Brogdon’s offensive impact in even higher regards regardless of a lukewarm postseason. Likewise, Brogdon’s $22.5 million salary next year represents a major chunk of change for any potential seismic deals Celtics president Brad Stevens may have up his sleeve. Either way, Boston doesn’t appear to be humoring Brogdon trade chatter at the moment.
