College athletics are changing in a big way with the impact of NIL and the transfer portal. The development of both of those things has added another job for coaches across the country and it’s also led to some programs hiring general managers.
Yes, general managers.
Programs like Duke and Villanova have hired general managers already, both DePaul and Howard have created positions similar too. But could North Carolina be next?
In his Summer press conference on Thursday, North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis hinted that the program could add someone in future at that role.
“It’s something I’m talking about. It’s something I’m considering. In regards to the changing things in college basketball,” Davis said. “Because there’s a number of responsibilities that I have, now you add on the transfer portal, the involvement of agents, NIL, that’s a lot.”
Additionally, North Carolina did add two coaches this offseason to fill positions with the team. Former guard Marcus Paige is back as he and Pat Sullivan will fill the roles of newly-created-on-court coaching positions.
As for a general manager? We will have to wait and see but it does seem like a smart move and the direction college basketball is moving to.
