The NBA’s new in-season tournament, set to debut in the 2023-24 season, was created to bring more meaning, money and viewership to the first half of the season for the Boston Celtics and the rest of the league.

The tournament is integrated into the existing 82-game regular season. Games in the tournament will count toward the standings. It may also discourage tanking given the increased importance those early games will have.

The tournament provides new opportunities for media rights holders as well, potentially increasing the value of future media rights deals.
