Washburn: Boston Celtics ‘have shown interest’ in free agent guard Austin Rivers

Per the Globe, Rivers “is looking for more than a mentor role.”

The Boston Celtics are in the market for some depth on the wing and some ball handling, and they may have their eyes on an unrestricted free agent veteran who could bring both to Boston roster for the 2023-24 season according to new reporting from the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn.

Per the Globe reporter, a “free agent looking for work is veteran guard Austin Rivers, whom the Celtics have shown interest. Rivers was technically a member of the Celtics organization previously. He was part of a 2015 deal that traded him to Boston from the New Orleans Pelicans and Jeff Green to the Memphis Grizzlies, but Rivers was quickly dealt again to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of the swap that brought Shavlik Randolph to the Celtics.

Son of the 2008 title head coach Doc Rivers, Austin last played with the Timberwolves, and, per Washburn, “is looking for more than a mentor role.”

“Rivers is likely one of those players who will be squeezed out of the free-agent market and seeking an NBA minimum contract,” adds the Globe reporter, which is about the level of spending power Boston has left given the team’s proximity to the dreaded second apron.
