Texas A&M’s Non-Conference schedule for the 2023-2024 college basketball season has been released.
After it was announced back in April that the Aggies would face Ohio State inside the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, on Nov 10, Texas A&M will also face Oral Roberts on Nov 17, followed by December clashes in Reed Arena with Depaul, and Memphis before heading back on the road to take on Houston in the Toyota Center, who will likely be ranked within the Top 10.
Outside of matchups with Houston and Memphis, Texas A&M will travel to Charlottesville, Virginia, to face the Cavaliers in one of the more intriguing ACC/SEC challenges on Nov 29. So, is this acceptable to all the critics of the Aggies’ “soft” non-conference slate last season? I’ll go out on a limb and say yes.
Per Texas A&M Athletics, here is their official release regarding the Aggies 2023-2024 Non-Conference Schedule:
The Texas A&M men’s basketball team’s challenging 2023-24 non-conference slate features at least four matchups against teams that earned spots in the 2023 NCAA Tournament field, including home contests against Oral Roberts and Memphis. The Aggies also have a neutral site game against Houston at the Toyota Center in Houston and a road game against Virginia as part of the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge.
In all, the Aggies will play 13 non-conference games, including six in the friendly confines of Reed Arena. The Maroon & White posted a sparkling 15-1 record on their home court, including a perfect 9-0 worksheet against SEC foes.
After opening the 2023-24 season with a home date against Texas A&M-Commerce on Nov. 6, the Aggies face a pair of tough road games against Ohio State on Nov. 10 and SMU on Nov. 14. The Buckeyes have earned a berth in four of the last five NCAA Tournaments, while SMU remains one of Texas A&M’s most-played rivals with 179 previous meetings (SMU leads 91-88).
The Aggies return home for a Nov. 17 matchup against Oral Roberts, which earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament after sweeping through the Summit League for its regular season and tournament championships.
Texas A&M will play three games at the ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando, Florida, during the week of Thanksgiving. The Aggies face a field consisting of Boise State, Butler, Florida Atlantic, Iowa State, Penn State, VCU and Virginia Tech with the draw being announced later this summer. Including the Aggies, six of the eight teams in the field participated in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
After the Orlando trip, A&M will stay on the road for a much-anticipated duel with perennial ACC power Virginia, which earned a 4-seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament after claiming a share of the ACC regular season title and advancing to the ACC Tournament championship game. It will be the second all-time meeting between the teams and the Aggies’ first-ever trip to Charlottesville.
The Aggies return to Reed Arena for a pair of early December home dates with DePaul on Dec. 6 and Memphis on Dec. 10. The Aggies split with the Blue Demons and Tigers on the road last fall, beating DePaul, 82-66, and dropping a narrow 83-79 decision to Memphis.
Texas A&M renews its rivalry with Houston with a Dec. 16 neutral site matchup with the Cougars at the Toyota Center. The two teams have 85 matchups in the all-time series but haven’t faced off on the hardwood since 2013. After winning the American regular season crown and reaching the AAC Tournament final, the Cougars earned a 1-seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen before falling to Final Four participant, Miami (Fla.).
The Aggies close out 2023 with a pair of home games as they take on Houston Christian before the holiday break on Dec. 22 and then tune up for SEC action with a Dec. 30 contest against Prairie View A&M.
