Most of you will probably recognize Seattle Seahawks legend Richard Sherman from his viral clip in the 2013 NFC Championship game when he screamed at a reporter after winning the game by breaking up a key pass against Michael Crabtree in their win against the 49ers.
Sherman is known for having talked a big game, but he always back it up and finished his career as one of the best cornerbacks to ever play the game. He will certainly enter the NFL Hall of Fame one day as a three-time First Team All-Pro, five-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl Champion.
At the conclusion of the 2021 season, Sherman decided to retire after a one-year stint with the Buccaneers. On a recent episode of the Richard Sherman podcast with Eagles offensive lineman, Lane Johnson, Sherman shared a hilarious story about how playing against former Alabama [autotag]DeVonta Smith[/autotag] is when he realized that he needed to retire.
Sherman said to Johnson, “DeVonta must’ve run this comeback. I had him under control, I was like, bam, quick jam, easy, had him under control. He must’ve stopped and I tried to stop and my whole groin said, ‘Snap, snap, snap, snap,’ and I said, ‘Whoa, whoa. Then you’re trying to guard and chasing him around and you’re like please don’t throw him the ball, please. My coach is looking at me on the sideline like, ‘Hey, you wanna come out, you wanna come out?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, but they’re in a hurry-up,’ so I’m like bailing out. At that moment I was like yeah, this is probably my last year. I don’t got it for these young dudes right here.”
After the injury Sherman suffered in this game, he was out for nearly two months. He did return to appear in two games at the end of the season, but that was how Sherman’s career, unfortunately, came to a close.
