On Sunday, longtime Raptors guard Fred VanVleet — now of the Houston Rockets — took to Instagram to compose a thoughtful farewell post to Toronto. That’s the franchise VanVleet played for in his first seven NBA seasons, including a run to the 2019 title.
After seeing the post, star rapper and Raptors super-fan Drake took to the comment section to troll VanVleet and his new team.
“My look alike … the love is forever,” Drake wrote in a response to VanVleet. “Thank you for your character and your contributions over the years. The city will never forget! Good luck with everything on the Guangdong Dragons … I mean, the Rockets.”
“Relax,” VanVleet replied.
Guangdong, of course, plays in China’s professional league.
The barb is understandable, since Houston went 22-60 last season and has finished with one of the NBA’s worst-two records in each of the last three years. The hope, however, is that by adding veterans VanVleet and Dillon Brooks — along with a well regarded head coaching hire, Ime Udoka — their fortunes will turn around soon.
VanVleet’s complete message can be viewed below.
