Kirk Herbstreit speaks on the ‘fascinating’ transfer portal study of Deion Sanders at Colorado

Kirk Herbstreit can’t wait to see how Colorado’s work in the transfer portal plays out

What Deion Sanders has done in the transfer portal has been a massive discussion point all offseason long. After being hired as the Colorado Buffaloes’ head coach,  he sent everybody packing and worked wonders in the portal. Even Colorado athletic director Rick George praised his work, which isn’t surprising.

Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi is one person who isn’t thrilled about the way the transfer landscape has changed. However, ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit had a lot to say about Coach Prime and the portal during a segment on The Pat McAfee Show:

I think in this era of the transfer portal, I don’t know if there’s a more fascinating study than Colorado. I remember (Sanders’) first speech when he talked about the ‘Louis luggage’ he has coming in, and he brought it in. And he had a lot of guys that left and I don’t know the exact numbers of the turnover between where they were last year and how many new faces they have this year. But that’s going to be fascinating. It’s basically, obviously, just a new roster… But you always wonder how (does a) team like that gel? We saw SC (Southern California) do that with Lincoln Riley — not to that level, but they gelled pretty well. And you know, they had a good year. Michigan State a couple years earlier made a lot of changes, so it can happen.

Herbstreit brings up valid points, and a recent example is Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans. Riley came over from Oklahoma, landed Caleb Williams, Jordan Addison and plenty more in the portal, and made the Pac-12 title game in his first year.

Now, Coach Prime is doing the same thing in Boulder, and it will be fascinating to see how everything plays out.
