Penn State WR target pushes commitment date back before official visit

Will Penn State beat out two Florida schools for this four-star wide receiver target in 2024?

After a slow start with the wide receivers in the 2024 recruiting class, Penn State could very much get it rolling soon. After flipping [autotag]Tyseer Denmark[/autotag] this week for their first receiver commitment, the Nittany Lions are favored to land a couple more.

Now, one of their top wide receiver targets has pushed back his commitment date ahead of his official visit to State College on June 23.

Originally, four-star Jerrae Hawkins was going to announce his commitment on June 26. He will now select his college on July 1.

Hawkins has taken two official visits so far in June. He visited Miami earlier in the month and Florida a week later.

He is a consensus four-star prospect originally from West Virginia who plays high school football at IMG Academy in Florida. On3’s industry rankings has him as the 38th-best receiver in the class and the 34th-best player in Florida.

Hawkins is a priority target for Penn State. According to 247Sports, he’s the only player making the trip to State College for an official visit this weekend, meaning he’ll get solo attention with the coaching staff.

The 5’9″ 160-pound wide receiver is a speedster type of player who runs track for his high school team when it’s not football season. There have been many speedy, big-play receivers that have played for Penn State in recent years, so there is an archetype for Hawkins in place.

On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has Penn State as the favorite to land Hawkins with a 41.1% chance before his official visit. Florida is second with 20.8% and Miami is third with 17.8%.

Penn State has been able to gain many of its undecided targets to commit after their official visits to campus. We’ll see if that’s the case for Hawkins when he officially announces on July 1.
