Texas head coach Rodney Terry has found success in the transfer portal this offseason, but hasn’t been able to retain his high school commitments.
The Longhorns lost five-star Ron Holland who opted to sign with the G League Ignite, and ranked as the No. 2 player in the country. Texas also lost five-star guard AJ Johnson who also opted to go the professional route rather than attend school.
Johnson decided to go the route that current Hornets guard LaMelo Ball and Detroit Pistons guard RJ Hampton pioneered, as he decided to play professionally in the NBL for the former club of Ball, the Illawarra Hawks.
While Terry was able to make up for their losses with transfer portal players and returners, it likely would be nice to add a younger player to build around. Especially when you consider the Longhorns lost former five-star guard Arterio Morris to Kansas and Rowan Brumbaugh to Georgetown.
Texas has their chance to do so. 2023 four-star combo guard Chris Johnson, a former Kansas signee that requested a release from his National Letter of Intent earlier this month, named his top three schools. Joining Texas on his short list are Arkansas and Washington.

247Sports ranks Johnson as the No. 52 player in the country, No. 11 combo guard, and the No. 3 player in the state of Texas. Despite hailing from Missouri City (Texas), Johnson transferred to Florida powerhouse Montverde Academy.
He could be a very promising addition to Texas’ roster for the upcoming season.
