The brunt of the offseason is in the books and training camp is still off on the horizon. Join us in the NFL’s dead zone with a player-by-player review of the Jaguars roster ahead of the 2023 season.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have a star at quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, but for a brief moment during the 2022 season it looked like the worst case scenario came to fruition.
During a blowout loss to the Detroit Lions, Lawrence was twisted down on a sack just before halftime and stayed down on the field in pain. C.J. Beathard stepping in to start at quarterback for the Jaguars seemed to be a very real possibility in that moment. But Lawrence jogged out for the second half and eventually led his team to the playoffs.
Through two seasons with the Jaguars, Beathard has thrown just 13 passes.
Still, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback did enough that the Jaguars opted to re-sign the backup in the 2023 offseason.
Contract (2023): $1.080 million base salary; $500,000 prorated signing bonus, $400,000 roster bonus, $100,000 workout bonus, $1 million in incentives; $2.080 million cap hit (2023). Due to become free agent in 2025.
Acquired: Jaguars signed Beathard in free agency on March 24, 2021.
