Lionel Messi only confirmed he’ll join Inter Miami on Wednesday and he won’t play in MLS for weeks, but he’s already having a major impact on the league.
One noticeable change can already be seen in the sky-high demand for tickets to see the legendary Argentine play in MLS.
For example, the ticketing platform Logitix said there were four times as many tickets sold on the secondary market for Inter Miami matches in 24 hours after Messi’s announcement compared to the entire previous on-sale period — which was more than five months.
Messi’s debut could potentially be a home game on July 21 against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup. Logitix said the get-in price (i.e. the cheapest ticket available) for that game rose from $24 to $521, an astronomical jump of 2,074 percent.
Some more data on the Messi ticket boom, per Logitix:
- The average get-in price for Inter Miami home matches increased from $15 to $230 (+1,398%)
- The average get-in price for Inter Miami away matches increased from $53 to $251 (+374%)
- The average purchase price for Inter Miami home matches increased from $31 to $152 (+394%)
- The average purchase price for Inter Miami away matches increased from $94 to $207 (+119%)
According to TicketSmarter, Messi’s games in big markets are a particularly hot ticket. The get-in price for Inter Miami’s game at the New York Red Bulls on August 26 is currently $390, while the game at Los Angeles FC on September 3 is $565.
