The North Carolina Tar Heels are losing a key piece to the 2023 recruiting class. Four-star guard Simeon Wilcher asked for the release from his letter of intent on Tuesday.
The shocking news dropped in the afternoon, one week before Wilcher was set to start his college career in Chapel Hill.
With the loss of Wilcher, UNC has a two-man 2023 class that features Zayden High and Elliot Cadeau. The late addition of Cadeau could have been the deciding factor for Wilcher, but it is suspected the program has known for weeks that Cadeau would be arriving early.
Either way, it’s tough news for UNC to take. Armando Bacot and Zayden High reacted on Twitter, posting tweets shortly after the news broke:
😞☹️

Running from the grind

As you can see, neither took the news well and both seem disappointed in Wilcher’s decision.
With North Carolina now having an open scholarship for this season, could UNC get another player to reclassify? Could it find another recruit out of the transfer portal? Stay tuned.
