Vikings experimenting with 3 safety package in OTAs

With a plethora of talent at the safety position, the Vikings are trying out different ways to use them.

The last OTA practice open to the media showed a lot of different things that the Minnesota Vikings were trying out. Not only did they have cornerback Mekhi Blackmon in the slot with the first team, they were also trying out a three-safety package with Josh Metellus.

The idea of a three-safety package is one that Brian Flores will likely deploy a lot this season. The linebacker room isn’t very strong and the Vikings have a wealth of riches at safety. Harrison Smith, Camryn Bynum, Lewis Cine, Jay Ward and Metellus are all players that should see significant snaps in some capacity this season.

In a small sample size, Metellus played really well as a safety in 2022, including a game-winning interception in week three against the Detroit Lions. That game saw Metellus get the start over first-round pick Lewis Cine.

Getting the best players on the field is a priority for every football coach and using three safety packages is a great way to do so.
