UNC basketball commit Simeon Wilcher seeks release from Letter of Intent

The UNC basketball program has lost the commitment of five-star guard Simeon Wilcher.

The North Carolina Tar Heels received some bad and unexpected news on Tuesday regarding the 2023 class. Four-star guard Simeon Wilcher has asked to be released out of his letter of intent to recommit and pursue other programs.

The news comes just about a week before Wilcher was set to be on UNC’s campus to start the summer semester. Now, the Tar Heels will have an open spot on the roster and scholarship as they are expected to grant his release sometime soon.

Wilcher committed to North Carolina in 2021 as a five-star recruit after visiting for Late Night With Hubert. He became the first player to commit to UNC in the 2023 class and was joined by G.G. Jackson who later decommitted and reclassified and then Zayden High.

The move also comes a week after five-star guard Elliot Cadeau announced he was reclassifying.  One has to wonder if the depth on the wing caused this move or if something else potentially happened.

With Wilcher’s commitment re-opened, he will be a hot target on the recruiting ranks and it wouldn’t shock us to see a program like St. John’s and Rick Pitino enter the mix.
