Penn State has some really good talent at the running back position for the upcoming 2023 season. This is no shocker to anyone who has been paying attention and watched what unfolded last season. And with a supposedly improved offensive line going into the upcoming season, the hopes and expectations are high for the Penn State running game once again in 2023.
College Sports Wire’s Patrick Conn took some time to review all of the running backs in college football this upcoming fall and took on the task of ranking them against one another. Penn State’s running back combination of [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag] and [autotag]Kaytron Allen[/autotag] gives the program arguably one of the top running back combos in the nation, if not just the Big Ten, but how do Singleton and Allen stack up individually against some of the best running backs in the nation?
Both of Penn State’s top young running backs ranked in the top 25 on Conn’s list, with Singleton being a top 10 running back on the list. But Conn had three other Big Ten running backs ranked ahead of Singleton, a former Gatorade National High School Player of the Year and last year’s Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Michigan running back Blake Corum ranked first overall on Conn’s ranking, which is to be expected after having a Heisman Trophy-caliber season last year for the Wolverines. Braelon Allen of Wisconsin and Miyan Williams of Ohio State followed as the second and third-best Big Ten running backs, respectively, according to Conn before getting to Singleton at no. 8 overall.
Here is what Conn had to say about Singleton.
Big Ten ranking: No. 4
Kaytron Allen received more touches last season, but Singleton was the homerun hitter for the Nittany Lions offense. It was on full display in the Rose Bowl where Singleton rushed seven times for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns. Going into his sophomore campaign, all eyes will be on No. 10.
Allen didn’t land in the top five among Big Ten running backs, but he did just miss the cut and remained a top-25 running back heading into the 2023 season. If not for Singletohn’s stats last season, Allen would have set the Penn State freshman rushing touchdown record, so fans know how valuable he will be to the offense this fall.
Here is what Conn had to say about Allen, who was the sixth-ranked running back among Big Ten players.
Nicholas Singleton gets all the headlines but Kaytron Allen can do more than just hold his own. The Nittany Lions join Michigan and Ohio State with two talented running backs on our list. Allen gives Penn State a nice one-two punch at running back and he could help get them over the top in the Big Ten East.
