Fans could see some rough QB play in the NFC South in 2023.
NFL.com’s Adam Schein released a ranking of every division by the strength of their quarterbacks, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ NFC South was ranked dead last. Schein commented that the notion of Saints QB Derek Carr being the best quarterback in the division isn’t a ringing endorsement of the QB talent it puts forward.
He didn’t have a lot to say about Bucs QB Baker Mayfield, though, making his thoughts on the new Tampa Bay signal caller brief:
What’s in store for Baker as a Buc? Who knows? This past season, he was bad in Carolina and solid in Los Angeles. He hasn’t been legitimately good in years, though there is legit receiver talent around him in Tampa.
Schein is perhaps on the mark about Mayfield, whose best season came in 2020 with the Cleveland Browns. That being said, Mayfield hasn’t technically won the job yet from Bucs QB Kyle Trask, who could make a run for the starting position in camp.
The Falcons will look to trot out second-year QB Desmond Ridder and the Panthers are likely to start newly-drafted QB Bryce Young, so it is true that the division could see a dip in quarterback play. The Bucs will hope that Mayfield or Trask can use Tampa Bay’s weapons to their advantage, however, and how well the two adapt to the circumstances remains to be seen.
