Cardinals release WR DeAndre Hopkins

After failing to trade DeAndre Hopkins, the Cardinals cut the star receiver

Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ time with the Arizona Cardinals is over. After the team was unable to trade him before the NFL draft, Arizona announced his release on Friday.

He immediately becomes a free agent.

Hopkins played three seasons after being acquired via trade in 2020, finishing his Cardinals career with 221 receptions for 2,696 yards and 17 touchdowns.

In 2020, he set a single-season franchise record with 115 catches and had 1,407 yards and six touchdowns.

However, between injuries and a PED suspension, he missed 14 games over the last two years.

He was due $19.45 million in salary this coming season and was going to carry a salary cap hit of $30.75 million. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Hopkins will not be a post-June 1 cut, meaning the Cardinals will take on $22.6 million in dead money this year.
