Florida’s men’s and women’s track and field teams combined to bring home 15 medals this weekend at the SEC Outdoor Championships held at Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with the two squads finishing sixth and second in the competition, respectively.
Four of the medals were earned on Friday with an additional 11 coming on Saturday, splitting up into seven golds, two silvers and six bronzes.
The first medal came on Friday when Sterling Lester won bronze in the women’s heptathlon with 5,778 points, followed by Alida van Daalen’s gold in the women’s shot put with an 18.07m/59’3.5″ performance — sweeping the indoor and outdoor SEC titles in the event. Later on, the long jump duo of Jasmine Moore and Claire Bryant won gold and bronze in the event, respectively, with 6.88m/22’7″ and 6.68m/21’11” measurements.
The last medal of the competition came in the 4×400 relay team of Jevaughn Powell, Emmanuel Bamidele, Jacory Patterson and Ryan Willie, who set a new collegiate record of 2:57.76 on their way to the golden finish. Robert Gregory won the men’s Commissioners Trophy — an honor given to the competitor at the SEC Outdoor Championships who amassed the highest points total.
Next up for the Gators is the NCAA East Preliminaries, which run from May 24-27 and will be held in Jacksonville, Florida.
