Earlier this week, Auburn head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] said that he has yet to find a “no-brainer” option at quarterback within the transfer portal.
“Every time a quarterback goes in the portal, (I say) ‘There he is! There he is!’ Then I watch the film, and I’m like, ‘No, that’s really not the one I’m looking for,’” Freeze said during a recent speaking engagement in Huntsville.
But, has Freeze found a possible candidate in former Nebraska quarterback [autotag]Casey Thompson[/autotag]? It appears that Freeze is willing to give him a shot.
According to a report by Christian Clemente of Auburn Undercover, Thompson is expected to visit Auburn on Sunday ($).
Thompson signed with Texas as a member of the Longhorns’ 2018 recruiting class. He signed with Texas as the No. 14 dual-threat quarterback of the class and the No. 6 prospect from the state of Oklahoma. He spent three seasons in Austin, where he would pass for 2,422 yards and 30 touchdowns in 19 total games. His 2021 campaign was impressive, as he threw for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns.
He then transferred to Nebraska, where he passed for 2,407 yards and 17 touchdowns in his lone season as a Cornhusker. Following spring practice, Thompson entered the transfer portal after competing with Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims for the starting quarterback job. Thompson enters the transfer portal as a graduate student.
Sunday is the final day for college football players to announce their intention to join the transfer portal.
