PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Ian Strong will start his freshman season with Rutgers football at wide receiver, representing a position change for the standout athlete from Long Island.
Strong was recruited to Rutgers as a safety but his athleticism and size is intriguing. He moves well and even at his size has the ability to be dangerous in the open field. This along with his width and wingspan makes for an ideal fit on offense.
He started the spring at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. He was a three-star safety out of St. Anthony’s (Long Island City, N.Y.) and ranked the eighth-best recruit in New York in the class of 2024 by 247 Sports.
The updated roster for Saturday’s annual ‘Spring Game’ reflects that Strong is now a wide receiver. He had started the spring season as a safety.
Given his length, catching radius and speed, it isn’t a surprise to see Strong get a look at wide receiver first. Wide receiver is certainly a position of need for Rutgers given their losses at the position (the top three wide receivers from last year’s team have all left for the NFL).
Strong’s pathway to early playing time is probably easiest at the wide receiver position.

The class of 2023 recruit’s athletic traits certainly point towards him being able to make an early impact on the Rutgers football offense.
