ESPN analytics predict the 2023 College Football Playoff teams

ESPN predicts Alabama to be a CFB Playoff contender again in 2023

For the final time, the College Football Playoffs will feature a four-team playoff in 2023 before it expands to 12 teams in 2024. The CFP has been a massive success in comparison to its predecessor, the BCS system, however, people still want more teams to get a shot.

The transfer portal and Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) have been implemented to help fix some of the parity issues in college football. The sport can sometimes be very top-heavy, but I don’t think that is bad for the game. For example, Alabama and Georgia are essentially yearly contenders in the playoffs but are consistently the two best teams.

Using their advanced analytics, ESPN predicts the CFP field in 2023. To no surprise, Alabama and Georgia will take part as well as Ohio State and Texas.

The Buckeyes continue to qualify year in and year out despite getting overwhelmed anytime they play an SEC school. In fact, they have only made it out of the semi-finals once since 2015, and they proceeded to lose 52-28 to the Tide in the ensuing national championship.

As for Texas, it would be their first appearance in the playoffs. Texas has to play at Alabama in September, so ESPN must assume the Longhorns will run the table the rest of the way. This will also be the Longhorns’ final year in the Big 12 before they join the SEC.

Essentially, the path to the national championship runs through the South.
