North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye enters the 2023 season as one of the best players returning in college football. After a record-breaking 2022 campaign in his first year as a starter, Maye is back to lead the Tar Heels once again.
Maye is North Carolina’s leader and their best player. He will command the offense for what many hope will be a big year. But this season, Maye will have to do it without two of his favorite targets from a year ago.
Receivers Josh Downs and Antoine Green are heading to the NFL, and the Tar Heels are hoping to replace that production. Mack Brown and his staff landed two receivers in the transfer portal: Devontez Walker and Nate McCollum committed to the program. And early on, Walker is building his relationship with Maye.
Following Saturday’s spring game, Walker revealed what Maye’s special trait is.
“He’s hard on himself, so he feels like everything is on him,” Walker said via Jeremiah Holloway of Inside Carolina. “He’ll come up to you after every play and ask you how you want (the ball).”
It’s clear Maye is a special talent and NFL analysts agree. He’s a candidate to be the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
While we see what Maye can do on the field, finding out details on how he is with teammates is a bonus. Hearing that he is hard on himself and works with his receivers well is a positive.
