One of the biggest athletic projects in the 2023 NFL draft is heading to Detroit for a pre-draft visit with the Lions. Georgia tight end Darnell Washington, all 6-foot-7 and 264 pounds of him, will meet with the Lions on an official “top-30” visit later this week, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC-2 in Houston.
Washington is generally viewed in the 25-50 overall range in the draft, a spread that includes Detroit’s second-round pick at No. 48.
An outstanding measurables type of athlete, Washington is fairly rudimentary as a receiving option. He caught only 45 passes in three seasons at Georgia, scoring just three TDs. His value lies in his size and blocking upside.
The Lions don’t figure to be in the market for an early-round tight end, but Washington’s potential to fill the role of “extra” offensive lineman is a variable that’s a feather in his cap.
