Former North Carolina Tar Heels standout and current broadcaster Eric Montross revealed some sad news on Saturday afternoon. The Montross’ family issued a statement announcing that he has begun treatment for cancer.
The statement did not specify the nature of cancer but he is undergoing treatment at UNC’s Lineberger Cancer Center.
Here is the statement that the family released on Saturday:
“We are all touched by the responses our entire family has received since the news became public,” the family stated. “Your support is more than appreciated; it is welcomed as a necessary part of beating cancer one day at a time. Our family is dealing with Eric’s diagnosis head-on – the only way we know how. And we are all in this fight together.”

Montross played 139 games in three years at North Carolina, averaging 11.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He was a member of the 1993 National Championship team, helping deliver another title to the program.
The Indianapolis native committed to North Carolina as a McDonald’s All-American in high school. He then went on to be a two-time Associated Press second-team All-American.
Following his career at UNC, Montross spent time in the NBA with the Boston Celtis, Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors.
Montross is currently the radio analyst for UNC basketball on the Tar Heel Sports Network.
